What is ENR?

NEW PICTURE

ENR (Empire of Nine Realms) is a non-profit historical group formed by Chinese nationals who are passionate about ancient history. We are an unofficial branch of the SCA. To comply with Chinese law, we are recognized as a branch but operate independently within China. Our current groups are located in Jiangsu Province and Guizhou Province, with an overseas group on the East Coast of the United States.

Our History

Our team has been around for quite a while, with a journey full of ups and downs as we've grown and evolved  over time. It all started back in 2010, when three middle school students in Nanjing shared a dream. Their love for chivalry left them wanting more, and they found themselves drawn to the ideas of reenactment and swordsmanship. Fueled by this inspiration, they came together to form the very first version of our group.

Pre SCA Era — The “Hanover Hospitaller Knights”

Our early members, most of whom were middle school students, had a passion for medieval history that went far beyond their years. Even in those early days, careful thought went into shaping the group’s identity.

Since medieval chivalry is closely tied to religion, discussions naturally turned to the topic of religious chivalry. Inspired by the history noble and selfless of the Knights of the Hospitaller—who treated everyone equally regardless their identity and religion, and dedicated themselves to saving lives—the team found a concept they deeply admired and aspired to embody. This vision of benevolence and honor has guided us ever since.

In its early days, the group focused on reenactments that revolved around clothing and combat. With limited resources available online, members dived into the challenge of restoring historical clothing, often relying on speculation and creativity to bring their visions to life. At the same time, they eagerly experimented with combat techniques. However, without professional guidance, ensuring safety and fairness during these combat activities was a significant challenge.

The quest for safe and affordable combat solutions has been a shared struggle for historical reenactment groups across China. Even as of the 2020s, finding a viable answer to this issue remains an ongoing challenge for the combat community.

Early SCA Era — The “Original Middle Kingdom”

In 2014, driven by a desire to improve group management and grow our group, our leader, Winfield, began exploring and connecting with the SCA in the United States. Just one month later, with the full support of all our members, we decided to join the SCA.

Our involvement with the SCA didn’t just strengthen our own group—it also inspired other groups across China to join us. Over time, we’ve seen groups from Henan, Guangdong, Guizhou, and Anhui become part of this shared journey, further expanding the network of historical enthusiasts in China.

In 2015, the SCA officially placed our group under the jurisdiction of the West Kingdom, alongside the SCA groups in South Korea and Japan, all managed by the Baron of the Far West. That same year marked a significant milestone for us when Michael Potter, a knight from the West Kingdom, visited our group in China. In his personal capacity, he generously donated SCA equipment to help us learn and grow. Since then, Michael has made regular trips to China, offering invaluable guidance and instruction to our team.

Another important figure, Will Marker, also visited our group in 2015. He became a long-term mentor to the branch in Shenzhen, dedicating himself to supporting SCA activities there. Sadly, the following year, Will passed away in Shenzhen due to a heart attack, leaving a legacy of inspiration and dedication that continues to resonate with us.

In 2017, Duke Tim, the former King of Æthelmearc, traveled to China and provided us with invaluable guidance. His efforts helped establish a strong alliance between the Kingdom of Æthelmearc and the SCA community in China. Later that year, Duke Tim led the “Help China” initiative, uniting with the Middle Kingdom and other kingdoms to fundraise for SCA China. Their efforts provided us with essential equipment and financial support, helping us grow and develop.

In 2018, the SCA Board of Directors decided to transfer our jurisdiction to the Kingdom of Lochac, marking a new chapter in our journey.

Thanks to the long-term support of Lady Cynthia du Pont, our team has maintained strong communication with the SCA Board of Directors. Over the years, members from various SCA kingdoms have visited China, sharing their knowledge and fostering exchanges.

Current SCA Era — The Empire of Nine Realms

In late 2019, taking into account various legal and safety considerations, the SCA Board of Directors redefined the China SCA as an unofficial branch. This decision was made to ensure the group’s activities complied with relevant Chinese laws since the groups are physically in China. Out of this transition, the Empire of Nine Realms (ENR) was born, carrying forward the spirit of historical and cultural activities inspired by the SCA model but operating fully independently.

Today, the ENR is made up of a domestic team in China and an overseas Chinese team. Both teams are unified under a shared management system, collaborating on activities and events. While ENR focuses primarily on Chinese culture, it also embraces medieval European culture as a complement to its cultural and sports activities.
